No political will to
tackle alcoholism
There is no political will to tackle
alcoholism, according to North Antrim MLA Seán Farren
Mr Farren said: “The disease costs the state huge sums of money annually in
providing services to help those afflicted cope with the disease, not to
mention the costs resulting from accidents, domestic violence, absenteeism,
court cases etc. etc..
“There is still far too much bravado about the heavy drinker,” Mr Farren said “Many
of us know people who suffer from alcoholism but aren’t aware of it.
“The general public is in denial that there is a serious drink problem in
society.
“I have no doubt that the political will is not there to take on alcoholism.
Alcohol is far too prevalent in our social lives. That is how the drinks
industry wants it and its sponsorship of sporting and other cultural events
ensures that this position is maintained. No wonder the drinks industry is failing
in its duty to warn of the dangers of alcohol.
“They only tell us to drink sensibly. Why don’t they put up a
photograph of George Best and say drink kills.
“If we’re depending on the drinks industry for education, it’s a very sorry
state.”
“What is required is a determined and
sustained campaign directed against alcohol abuse, a campaign that is mounted
not just in the streets but in schools, universities, colleges, workplaces and
in recreational centres. Furthermore it should be paid for not just by the
taxpayer but from the profits made by the drinks industry.”
