Commenting on the
proposed restrictions on developments in rural areas North Antrim MLA Seán
Farren said:
“Planning rules must balance protection of the environment with the real needs of those who genuinely have a connection with the rural and farming communities.
“The truth is that in some places planning permissions have been granted where genuine need has not existed and where the inhabitants of houses have no connection with the rural or farming communities. Such cases have now made it more difficult for people with genuine need to get permission to build.
“The SDLP believes in the need to strike a proper balance and to ensure that the environment is fully protected. We recognise that improper development adds to the threat of pollution and to increased traffic on roads not designed for that increase.
“But those with a farming interest must be able to provide for their own needs not just when working the land but in their retirement. Other workers who must reside in the countryside must also have their needs clearly recognised.
“If restrictions on uncontrolled development in the countryside are to work then adequate land for housing must be provided in urban areas, close to towns and villages. The current draft Northern Area Plan does not do so and must be amended to allow for this provision.”
