SDLP Supports Intercultural Week

Stating his party’s support for the week long programme of events to mark Intercultural Week (March 19-25) SDLP North Antrim MLA Seán Farren said:

“Intercultural week is an important reminder to us all that we are fast becoming a multi-cultural society. No longer can we talk about Northern Ireland simply in terms of two cultures, however significant these remain. In a short few years a considerable number of people from other ethnic backgrounds will be full citizens and hopefully will be participating fully in all aspects of public life.

“It is critical therefore that we ensure that all cultures now represented in Northern Ireland are able to express themselves and able to contribute to our diversity. That is the theme of this year’s Intercultural Week and the SDLP is fully behind its aims and objectives.

“The week also includes ‘International Day Against Racism’ (March 21) and is an important reminder that as we celebrate diversity we are also tackling the scourge of racism.

“We already have had far too many examples of racist attitudes and of racist behaviour in many parts of the North, including unfortunately in some parts of North Antrim.

“The SDLP condemns any form of racism and is determined to do all in our power to eliminate from our society.

“My office is available to advise anyone from any cultural background and, as someone with experience in the developing world, I have a deep appreciation of the reasons why many people choose to come to Ireland in seek of work and of a new life. I hope those who are here fully enjoy their stay and if they choose to remain that they will contribute to our public life in many different and fruitful ways.”
