Farren: Stand By Campbelltown Ferry Pledge

SDLP North Antrim MLA Sean Farren said he is alarmed by reports that the Direct Rule administration is weakening in its support for are instatement of the Ballycastle ferry service.

He said: “It would be a great pity if the government was to renege at this point. The devolved Executive struck a good deal with the Scottish Executive to support this important tourist link in the proportion of us providing one third and the Scottish side two-thirds of the required subsidy. Scotland has maintained its commitment and so should the ministers who currently govern us.

“This link needs to be maintained if the concept of balanced regional development is to be more than a pretence. It can be a catalyst for much-needed economic development at both ends and in the longer term it has great tourist potential. It is the very essence of tourism development that you have to build the facilities before the people will come.

This is a classic case for public subsidy and when the Executive and Assembly are fully restored the matter will be taken up.”
