SDLP Compliments Ballycastle On Twelfth
SDLP Councillors
Madeline Black and Catherine McCambridge who together with North Antrim MLA
Seán Farren observed the Twelfth parade in Ballycastle have complimented the
people of Ballycastle on their attitude and behaviour towards the march as well
as the organisers on the manner in which the parade was conducted.
The SDLP
representatives said: “Ballycastle people can be very proud of the way in which
they conducted themselves during the parade on the Twelfth. There parade took
place in an atmosphere of respect and the organisers played their part in
ensuring that the parade was well conducted and that no unruly behaviour
occurred.
“The SDLP has always
stood for mutual respect and for tolerance. As long as the loyal orders are
prepared to conduct their parades in a dignified and respectful manner and that
they consult with residents along the route proposed there is no reason why
parades should not be peaceful.
“What is now required
is wider consultation between the loyal orders and local communities. A start
was made this year with the public meeting held by the Orange Order. Such
meetings need to be held more frequently so that that people can appreciate
what the loyal orders stand for and what their marching traditions means.
“Hopefully we have
turned a corner this year and that the marching season will continue to be
peaceful and that the future will be a more positive one as far as marching is
concerned.”
